Pterostilbene is emerging as a subject of interest in the medical community, but thus far, there has not been a large amount of research or trials conducted with humans, except for those studies referenced above.*

Pterostilbene Mode of Action
Pterostilbene is a polyphenol contained in plants, fruits, and nuts, with the highest concentration in blueberries and grapes (1, 2). It is very similar to resveratrol and differs only through two methoxy groups on the molecule instead of the two hydroxy groups found on the resveratrol molecule. Both resveratrol and Pterostilbene are phytoalexins, compounds that plants produce which function as self-defense against insects and parasites (1).
Pterostilbene is more potent than resveratrol and has a higher bioavailability (1).
Pterostilbene used individually has many benefits but human studies are scarce. It may reduce blood pressure in humans when used on its own (6). However, some of its best abilities to promote healthy aging have been studied in humans.
Pterostilbene, when combined with NAD (nicotinamide riboside) intermediate products such as Tru Niagen® which contains nicotinamide riboside (NR), promotes cellular health while aging due to its ability to raise NAD levels (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) (3). NAD biosynthesis in mammals is a pathway involved in cells throughout the body and is believed to regulate the process of aging. Nicotinamide is converted into NMN which is then converted into NAD. Intermediate enzymes, like nicotinamide riboside (NR), increase the available NAD and contributes to overall longevity and cellular health in the body (4). A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study followed the effects of pairing Pterostilbene with NR and found that it was an effective way to raise NAD levels, and thus contribute to cellular health and fitness while aging (3). Combining NR and Pterostilbene may also increase LDL cholesterol as demonstrated in human clinical studies (2).

Pterostilbene Side Effects and Toxicity
Human trials have indicated that Pterostilbene is generally safe in doses of up to 250 mg/day and well-tolerated in twice daily dose frequency (5). Pterostilbene may increase LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol (6).
