Krill Oil Softgel Benefits
Consuming a well-balanced diet rich in Omega 3 fatty acids has demonstrated abilities to support cardiovascular and heart health, cognitive health, bone, and joint health, and provide mood support. Fatty fish is the most common source of essential fatty acids. Fish oil supplementation is an effective way to boost Omega 3 intake.
Krill oil is an excellent source of Astaxanthin: an antioxidant which promotes anti-inflammatory activity, especially in the cardiovascular system and may be helpful in joint health (1).
The benefits of Krill Oil are very similar to Fish Oil, but the presence of Astaxanthin has demonstrated the ability to increase levels of HDL, or the “good” cholesterol (2).
Krill Oil Softgel Mode of Action
The balance in the modern Western diet of Omega 3 fatty acid to Omega 6 fatty acid is out of proportion. Ancient humans had a more balanced ratio of these fatty acids. Omega 6 is mainly derived from seed oil, and the switch from livestock feed from Omega 3 dominant diets to Omega 6 dominant diets of grain and seed has contributed to the current imbalance. Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids compete for the same enzymes, and too much Omega 6 inhibits synthesis of Omega 3 fatty acids (3).
Essential fatty acids like Omega 3 fatty acids are long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Derived from marine sources, Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EHA) supplementation have many benefits (4). Both DHA and EPA are naturally present in cellular phospholipid bilayers, and they function to maintain membrane fluidity, cell signaling, gene expression, ligand binding to receptors, and docosanoid and eicosanoid synthesis (3).
EPA is necessary for eicosanoid synthesis but the predisposition for cell membrane phospholipids to retain DHA (especially in the brain) leads to the conclusion that DHA is quantitatively more essential to the human body (3).
DHA is found in high concentrations in the brains of mammals. It can also be found in the membrane bilayers of heart and kidney tissues. The influence of DHA on molecular activity in the Na+K+ATPase pump may account for the higher level of energy utilization in the brain. Sixty percent of the weight of the brain is from phospholipids (3).
DHA has demonstrated its ability to slow cognitive decline because of its special relationship to the brain and neural tissue (5).
Essential fatty acids support bone health by increasing calcium absorption in the gastrointestinal system and enhancing the effects of Vitamin D and enhancing bone collagen synthesis (6).
The role of EPA and mood support is still being investigated but has shown promise in supporting a healthy mood (7). A combination of DHA and EPA may improve mood profile as demonstrated in clinical studies (8).
