Product Description
DMAE L-Bitartrate (Dimethylethanolamine bitartrate), a salt form of the cholinergic compound DMAE formed from DMAE and tartaric acid, is the active compound in Centrophenoxine (1)(2).
DMAE L-Bitartrate Benefits
- May support memory and cognitive function (ref)*
- Supports mood when combined with a multi-vitamin (ref)*
The following references are examples of dynamics associated with DMAE through the animal model and may not be representative of the effects in the human body:
- May decrease lipofuscin (pigments related to aging) (ref)*
- Supports neurotransmitter function (ref)*
- Promotes antioxidant activity (ref)*
DMAE L-Bitartrate Mode of Action
DMAE is naturally occurring in sardines and anchovies and in small amounts in the brain (3). As a cholinergic, DMAE is hypothesized to be methylated in the body to form choline and then converted to acetylcholine (1).
Animal research suggests that DMAE also inhibits the metabolism of choline in peripheral tissues which, in turn, allows choline to be more available in the blood and reach the brain, where it stimulates the receptors in the cholinergic pathways (4).
Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter in the parts of the brain that impact memory and learning, attention, and alertness–making it one of the most beneficial neurotransmitter compounds for overall cognitive function and brain health (5).
DMAE can be found in body creams and face creams due to its effects on the skin and potential effects to reduce age pigment topically (2).
DMAE L-Bitartrate Dosage
Pure Nootropics’ DMAE L-Bitartrate provides 250 mg per 1 capsule. Suggested use for adults is 1 capsule by mouth once daily.
DMAE L-Bitartrate Side Effects and Toxicity
DO NOT use if pregnant or nursing. Like Centrophenoxine, DMAE can produce birth defects (6).
When taken orally, side effects may include headache, drowsiness, constipation, insomnia, urticaria, depression, hypomania, overstimulation, increase schizophrenic symptoms, blood pressure elevations, confusion, vivid dreams, and tardive dyskinesia (7).
Please consult your healthcare practitioner if you are taking any medications before beginning supplementation with DMAE.
The lethal dose of DMAE in mice was achieved at 3100 mg/kg and 1080 mg/kg in rats (1).
