CDP Choline Benefits
CDP choline (also know as Citicoline) is a precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, making it most beneficial for overall cognitive function and brain health. CDP choline may improve hippocampal acetylcholine, this is the part of brain responsible for memory formation and may be most helpful for those experiencing age related cognitive decline.
Studies also show that hippocampal acetylcholine levels may be reduced in those who take racetams (such as Piracetam, Aniracetam ,etc.) because of acetylcholine uptake and mobilization.
Most people don’t get enough choline in their diet, which causes cognitive problems alone, and further taking racetams without the proper choline consumption can cause headaches and other various side effects. Research shows that 10% or less of the population consumes adequate choline.
There is also some evidence that suggests CDP choline may positively effect memory formation and learning ability in young adults.
CDP Choline Dosage
The dosage for CDP choline is anywhere from 300 mg up to 2000 mg per day. If two doses are taken, they are generally separated by 8-10 hours.
CDP Choline Mode of Action
Choline is a water soluble essential nutrient that has extreme importance for the health of cell membranes. It is an essential part of every person’s diet because it is the precursor for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter responsible for transmitting messages through nervous system and further carrying out effects, such as memory and muscle control.
CDP Choline Toxicity
Research shows Citicoline displays negligible toxicity. The LD50 for ingested citicoline is even higher at approximately 8 grams per kilogram of body weight in both mice and rats.
